Cheltenham Racecourse





As part of the next phase of the long term masterplan for Cheltenham Racecourse, a major new grandstand was proposed by The Jockey Club. This also provided the catalyst for a wider review and development of the external spaces around the course.

Addressing the key challenge of uniting the various areas of the racecourse while overcoming the substantial level changes across the site, but at the same time design for the large volumes of people who will use this space while ensuring that the central part of the course had a strong sense of place, identity and legibility

Redesigning the landscape works provided the opportunity to remove bottlenecks, areas prone to overcrowding and open the site up so to create a world class sporting venue

Creation of a new central a new plaza, providing a gathering space and focal point for Best Mate; a tribute to a much loved horse

Providing elevated walkway around three sides of the Parade Ring, creating an amphitheatre-like space drawing attention to its centre; planting and feature paving form an integral part of its setting and connect the numerous elements throughout the course
